The Company is proud to provide the opportunity to obtain the following ISTD teaching qualification; Level 4 Diploma in Dance Education (DDE). The DDE is aimed at those who wish to begin training as a dance teacher and offers the opportunity to become a fully qualified and regulated ISTD dance teacher.

We currently offer the qualifications in both Modern Theatre and Tap Dance genres, tutored by Aaron Lissimore FISTD & Jessica Morgan-Beale FISTD.

Level 4 Diploma in Dance Education (DDE)
- The ISTD’s Level 4 DDE is an achievable and streamlined teaching qualification, which provides student teachers with a clear progression pathway to becoming an ISTD qualified teacher (either Licentiate or Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy), and an overall excellent introduction to a career in teaching dance. The contextual nature of the assessment will ensure that student teachers develop the practical skills and knowledge required to enter the teaching profession and to develop a sustainable career. In studying the DDE, candidates cover a breadth of material, leaving them fully qualified within their chosen dance genre.

DDE Units of Study

It consists of 5 units (120 credits in total), which can be taken individually, although they all link to one another ensuring a depth of knowledge which prepares the student teachers thoroughly for the studio and the start of their teaching journey.

Unit 1: Preparing for Safe Teaching (15 credits at Level 3)

Unit 2: Observing, Assisting and Teaching Practice (30 credits at Level 4)

Unit 3: Vocational Graded Examination in Dance: Intermediate (28 credits at Level 3)

Unit 4: Dance Practice (30 credits at Level 4)

Unit 5: Social, Emotional and Cognitive Development (17 credits at Level 4)

Regulated Qualifications

From health and safety to the contextual study of dance, practical observation of teaching to planning, evaluating and leading your own dance classes, a regulated initial teaching qualification not only makes you much more employable, but fully prepares you for the day when you might open your own dance school.

The DDE is regulated by the Regulatory Bodies in England and Wales and (Ofqual for England and Northern Ireland, and the Department of Education and Skills for the Welsh Assembly) and are on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and awards 120 QCF credits accordingly. This means that, as well as standing alone as respected dance teaching qualifications that give you the opportunity to teach across a wide variety of dance genres, they can contribute towards other higher level qualifications.
